About this item Written by Crutchfield's Steve Kindig Hybrid design + active processing = zero signal loss Metra's Install Bay active hybrid HDMI cables are a great way to go when you have a long cable run between a 4K source and your 4K TV. These cables support the maximum 18 Gbps bandwidth provided by the HDMI 2.0 standard, and they're plenum-rated for in-wall use in residential or commercial installations. Unlike conventional copper-based HDMI cables, these hybrid cables divvy up the signal-carrying duties among four fiber optic conductors and seven copper conductors. The other advantage of these cables is the "active" part — the built-in signal processing chip. It helps ensure that your signals travel from source to display with no loss or interruption. The cable is self-powered, drawing 5V via the HDMI connection to the source device, so no external power supply is needed. These cables can handle the latest advances in video technology, including 4K Ultra HD and HDR content. Plenum-rated for industrial-strength safety Common plenum spaces include HVAC ductwork, dropped ceilings, and raised floor spaces. Those kinds of spaces are often used for cable runs in businesses; it's much less common in residences. Plenum-rated cables use special insulation and jacket materials that cause them to smoke and burn less than other cables. A related feature that makes plenum-rated cables safe to run through ventilation ducts is that if these cables are exposed to fire, they will not release toxic chemicals into the air. Plenum-rated cables can generally take the place of CL2 or CL3 cables for in-wall installation, but they may be overkill in a home, and plenum cables typically cost more than the other types. Metra's plenum-rated HDMI cables are thin, lightweight, and flexible — their small bending radius of 45mm makes connections in tight spaces possible. The cables have labeled connector ends to reduce installation error (there's only one correct way to hook them up).
